Every day the members of Southernmost Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #028 of Florida, honor our fallen brothers and sisters. Each day we put on the uniform and star just as they did, although they paid the ultimate sacrifice for our community. Each of us vows every day to carry on in their honor.
End of Watch, Deputy Melissa Powers, Monroe County Sheriff's Office, June 22, 2010
The Southernmost Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Deputies of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office are sadden at the loss of Deputy Sheriff Melissa Powers.
In the late evening of June 22, 2010, Deputy Sheriff Melissa Powers died in an on-duty vehicle crash at the 101 mm Overseas Highway (US-1), Key Largo, Monroe County, Florida.
Deputy Sheriff Powers was responding to back-up another officer when she was involved in a motor vehicle crash. Deputy Sheriff Powers was transported to Mariners Hospital where she was pronounced deceased having succumb to her injuries.
Deputy Sheriff Powers is survived by Autumn Guerrero (daughter) and Lexus Guerrero (son) and Detective Lazaro Guerrero with the Homestead Police Department. Deputy Sheriff Powers is also survived by; Bob Freer (father), Barbara Tansey (step-mother), Judy Powers (mother), Rob Powers (step-father), Elizabeth Powers (sister), Karen Powers (sister), Beatrice Freer (grandmother), Thomas Tansey (step-brother), Sean Tansey (step-brother), Sheryl Brewer (aunt), Mike Freer (uncle), and Joe Freer (uncle)
Deputy Sheriff Powers has served with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office since December 2006, and has served on road patrol in Marathon and Key Largo.
